How Recycling's Bin Helping the Business

Source: PepsiCo News, April 25, 2014

Since PepsiCo launched a U.S. recycling program on Earth Day four years ago, the national beverage container recycling rate has increased from 34 to 42 percent – on target to our 2018 goal of 50 percent.

To keep recyclers energized, PepsiCo is emphasizing that simple acts can lead to a big impact. Meagan Smith, director of PepsiCo Recycling, said, “We believe that every captured bottle and can matters.”

A recent survey found that 94 percent of Americans would recycle more with easily accessible recycling bins in their communities. That’s why PepsiCo is partnering with retailers, businesses and customers – like schools and entertainment venues – to bring recycling to communities across the country in innovative ways.

PepsiCo’s recycling efforts not only benefit the planet. Meagan said, “Our recycling programs add value to the business and help us stand out from competitors.”

Recycling has already proved to be a differentiator, helping PepsiCo secure new business, strengthen relationships with customers and make our own marketing activations, like sampling, greener.

When PepsiCo signed an exclusive non-alcoholic cold beverage agreement with the University of Arkansas, the company also offered on-the-go recycling – a boon to student sustainability groups.

Enterprise car rentals and Kum & Go, a convenience and gas station chain, are among the many businesses and retailers that have made PepsiCo recycling bins available.
